The Nassarius
“The ship we left on was a skipjack-class cargo runner called the Nassarius. It weren’t made for passengers, but they packed as many people on as they could and drew a lottery to pick ‘em. Kids got three tickets each, adults two, the elderly one. You could give your shot to someone else if you wanted, and a lot of people did, outta the goodness of their hearts, to keep families together. It was the first of a whole fleet planned to take people to safety off Marekune. My parents agreed they’d give their spots to us kids if their tickets were drawn."
